Affluent Westport is one of the idyllic New England towns that dot the southernwestern shores of the Long Island Sound, an area best known for its moniker: Gold Coast. It occupies a total area of around 33 square miles and divided into several neighborhoods. It currently hosts a population of almost 24,500 residents.
History highlights:
- “New England in tradition, cosmopolitan in outlook,” Westport was established and incorporated in 1835. Its founders, a group called the Bankside Farmers, came much earlier, however, and settled in the area in 1693.
- Westport underwent a couple of name changes. It was briefly known as Bankside at first. In 1732, it was rechristened as Green’s Farm after one of the Bankside Farmers. In 1835, Westport was made its official name.
- Fast forward hundreds of years, Westport transformed into a lively coastal town with enough arts, culture, and natural beauty to go around. All of these factors led to Westport’s growth, attracting plenty of New Yorkers to come and live here.
